This painting was made in September during my annual pilgrimage to Taos, New Mexico. I painted there the day before I began teaching my one-week Taos Kathleen Elsey Painting Workshop. I was looking down over the Hondo Valley farmlands to the town of Valdez. I painted in the morning, before the heat set in, before the winds kicked up and before the typical 1:00 p.m. thunderstorm. I was unable to complete the painting on location, so finished the painting in my studio after I returned to Santa Barbara, California,  working from sketches, photos and my memory of the beautiful land of New Mexico.
The Kathleen Elsey painting workshop group has painted this location in the past. It is empowering to stand at the top of this valley and make a painting. Wind, sun, and an occasional thunderstorm all add to the spirit of plein air painting in Taos, New Mexico and its environs. Kathleen Elsey, California Fauve
