Painting this shady table began on location in October. The lavender had been cut into tidy green mounds. The autumn leaves had begun to fall, and the concrete table, shaded by oak trees, was cast in shadows. I worked on this painting much more in my studio, attempting to capture the serene shady intimacy of this table on the side of Sonoma Mountain. The trees, the earth, the table and chairs were the same color as each other, and I wanted to paint them as if they were one, obscured by each other, becoming one. I will visit this table again, in another season, another time of day and paint it again.
