Kathleen Elsey Painting of Sonoma, California
”Rock Meadow” 18” x 24” 2001 Sold

Rock Meadow was painted in 2001 on Sonoma Mountain just 2 miles from where I lived. I was looking east, toward the Mayacama mountains, which run north/south, dividing Sonoma County and Napa County. I wanted to capture the beautiful orange and red colors in the mountains, which actually, are vineyards in the distance. Probably pinot grapesfor which this area is known. I especially like the way the oak tree on the right was leaning into the scene. I wish you could hear the birds that were chirping that afternoon. And the two horses (which I didn’t paint) were so nosey. They kept standing right in front of me, trying to chew at my wooden easel over the fence. I continued painting around them, and eventually, as I continued to ignore them, they wandered off.
Kathleen Elsey paints the back roads of California and New Mexico. She teaches painting workshops in California, New Mexico and New York.
