Kathleen Elsey's painting, "Sunflowers in Jar"

2001   20" x 16"  SOLD

This painting was made on September 4th, 2001, one week before the New York City terrorists attacks of 911. I was in Taos, New Mexico, studying with Master Painter, Ray Vinella. Ray is one of the founders of the Taos Six along with Walt Gonske, Ron Barsano, Julian Robles, Robert Daughters and Rod Goebel. Ray was a inspiring painting teacher and offered me such knowledge and motivation that it helped to define my painting voice. Two other paintings done with Ray in that same week are Pears and Figs, and Onions and Garlic. Then 911 happened. I left Taos that morning driving the twenty-two hour long journey to my home in the safe and peaceful mountains of Sonoma County. It was a sad time and a confusing time. I kept searching for answers and peace, but of course, that was a long time coming. I wouldn't paint for another whole month. Then in early October, I drove from my home thirty miles to the Pacific coast with my brushes hoping to break out of a depressing creative block. I painted "Pink Fog Morning." An important painting for me, I kept it in my private collection for over ten years. Finally, in 2012, I agreed to sell it to a collector who herself had been mesmerized with it for two years.
