Kathleen Elsey painter

Statement

My interest in painting is with direct paint application in an expressive manner while using pure color combinations and meaty brushstrokes. I paint interior-scapes, landscapes and still-life in acrylic on linen and canvas in my studio or on location. I have studied and been influenced by the French Impressionists, the Fauvists and the Californian Society of Six.

My intent is to paint color, light and shadows rather than painting the subject I am looking at. As a colorist, I strive to see colors and shapes and transfer those images to my canvas. During the first hours of beginning a painting, I work to translate my feeling before considering any details. These works are the result of an intense and rapid outpouring of emotion while I try to let color and light speak.

Often I’ll paint the same idea or scene three or four times, each with a different feeling, or a different composition, or a different kind of light. There are many possibilities of how to communicate with paint.
